Taron Egerton Has Been in Talks With Kevin Feige to Play Wolverine in the MCU

Ever since it was announced that Marvel Studios had gained the rights to the characters from the X-Men comics, speculation has been rife as to which mutants will be appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with one name coming up again and again: Wolverine. And when it came to who might play the MCU’s new version of Wolverine, another name kept doing the rounds: Rocketman and Kingsman star Taron Egerton.

Egerton has previously been incredibly tight-lipped, albeit diplomatic, on the subject of Wolverine. In an interview on The One Show on the BBC earlier this year, he compared the character to James Bond, saying: “It would be exciting to play a role where you play to by such a huge audience. Those movies are the most-watched movies in the world. It’s a great thrill and it’s a great part. But there’s no truth in it. Very flattering, though.”

However, Egerton has just confirmed that he actually has been in talks with Marvel boss Kevin Feige to play Wolverine. Responding directly to the question during a recent profile in the NY Times, he said there is still very much a possibility that this could happen.

“I don’t think it would be wrong to say that,” he said. “I’d be excited but I’d be apprehensive as well, because Hugh is so associated with the role that I’d wonder if it’d be very difficult for someone else to do it… But hopefully if it does come around, they’ll give me a shot.”

While the character of Wolverine, aka Logan, has been a staple of Marvel Comics since the 1970s, he became entrenched in wider popular culture in the early 2000s thanks to Hugh Jackman’s portrayal in X-Men. Jackman would go on to play Wolverine a total of nine times in the 20th Century Fox movies, with his character’s story forming the backbone of the first trilogy and leading to no fewer than three solo spinoffs.
